Five Ways to Improve your Home Workspace Ergonomics

1. Maintain a Neutral Posture

For the lower body, seated leg extensions and ankle circles maintain circulation in the legs, which is often compromised when sitting for extended periods. Hip flexor stretches, where you stand and pull your knee towards your chest, can counteract the effects of sitting all day. Additionally, taking short walks around your home or office can not only stretch your legs but also clear your mind, leading to increased productivity upon return to work tasks.

3. Ensure Proper Desk and Chair Height

Your desk and chair should be at a height that keeps your elbows close to your body and your arms at or below a 90-degree angle. This helps prevent strain on your shoulders and wrists.

The key to ensuring a good desk and chair height is to aim for a setup that allows your body to maintain a neutral, relaxed posture. A well-adjusted chair should support your lower back and allow your feet to rest flat on the floor or on a footrest, with your thighs parallel to the ground. Your desk height should enable your elbows to rest comfortably at a 90-110° angle when typing or writing. Adjustable desks and chairs offer the flexibility to fine-tune your workspace to your body’s proportions, which is particularly beneficial if multiple people use the same workstation.

4. Position Your Monitor Correctly

Your monitor should be at eye level and about an arm’s length away. This prevents you from having to bend your neck up, down, or sideways to see your screen clearly.

For the optimal monitor position, the top of the screen should be at or slightly below eye level, tilted back at a 10-20° angle to prevent neck strain. A well-placed monitor can prevent strain on your eyes, neck, and back, enhancing productivity and well-being. Start by placing your monitor in a spot that eliminates glare, which can cause eyestrain and lead to an uncomfortable posture. The ideal position is at a right angle to windows and away from direct light sources. Your monitor should be directly in front of you, with the top line of the screen at or slightly below eye level, to avoid tilting your head up or down. An arm’s length distance is recommended, allowing you to view the entire screen without excessive head turning. Adjust the monitor height so that you can read the screen comfortably without bending your head or neck forward or backward.

5. Use Adequate Lighting

Good lighting is crucial to avoid eye strain. Make sure your workspace is well-lit but avoid glare on your computer screen.

Optimal lighting levels are generally considered to be around 500 lux for the work area, with surrounding areas at about 300 lux and background lighting at 100 lux. To achieve this, you can start by assessing the natural light available and then add layers of artificial lighting to suit your needs. Ambient lighting provides a base level of illumination and should be evenly distributed to avoid shadows and glare. Task lighting is crucial for focused work and should be bright enough to prevent eye strain but not so bright as to cause glare on screens or work surfaces. Accent lighting can be used to highlight specific areas or objects in the room, adding depth and character to your workspace. It’s also recommended to use adjustable lighting and dimmers to cater to different tasks and times of the day, ensuring that you can always have the right light level for any activity. Remember, the goal is to create a lighting setup that not only meets the recommended lux levels but also feels comfortable and conducive to your work style. By carefully planning and layering different types of lighting, you can create a home office space that is both functional and inviting.
